Native Americans were the first inhabitants of the area until cattle ranches were established in the 1850s to supply wagon trains. Sheep raising followed and by 1859 the discovery of the Comstock Lode virtually shut down the booming mines of California.

The legendary Comstock Lode was probably the greatest single mineral strike in history. It put Nevada on the road to becoming the "land of enchantment" - a world of bright lights, entertainment, instant fortune and fabulous food.

The state's popularity increased even more in the 1920s due to liberal residency laws and easy divorces.

To accommodate the influx, hotels, dude ranches, casinos, bars and restaurants increased dramatically and became the foundation for our fabulous tourist industry. Casino gambling was sanctioned in 1931 to protect and bolster tourist trade in the face of the Great Depression. Before the 1960s, Reno was the gambling capital of the world.
